Thurs., July 7 - Early Birds – If you arrive the day before the tour begins (leave US on July 6), we can reserve a room for you at the Eurohotel, near the airport. Allows some time in Vienna or to rest. We’ll transport tour goers from the Eurohotel to a festive get-acquainted Austrian dinner in a family owned heuriger, a big hit with our tour-goers.
Fri, July 8 – Tour begins in Bratislava (we provide transport for the early birds). See the old town with a local guide to learn the history and legends; time to shop or enjoy the cafes. We journey to Banska Bystrica in the heart of Slovakia. A festive welcome party awaits as we toast Slovak champagne. Enjoy a night lights walking tour of the historic square and end up in an outdoor café
in this vibrant venue. (2 nights - Banska Bystrica ZVOLEN, central Slovakia)
Sat. July 9 - Tour Banska Bystrica’s historic square and the castle /cathedral. Enjoy the farmer's market and sample strudel, climb the learning tower for a bird’s eye view. Time to visit the famed Museum of the National Uprising, shaped like a shepherd’s hat; it features inter-active displays of Slovakia’s role in WWII. On to the colorful Detva Folk Festival with music, song, dance, crafts and foods. Then an atmospheric Koliba dinner-Slovak specialties & music on local instruments.
Sun., July 10 – Enjoy a scenic drive through the Middle Carpathians. Wander historic Kezmarok, streets filled with crafts demonstrations and treasures for sale at the largest International Crafts Festival in Europe, 100 plus exhibitors, folk dancing, local foods and a medieval parade. We'll catch our first glimpse of the snow-clad High Tatras. Our celebration continues with villagers presenting folk music and cus-toms at dinner. Opportunity to buy authentically dressed dolls from a famed maker. (3 nights - the Slovak Paradise in SPIS, Eastern Slovakia)
Mon., July 11 – Experience a village museum showcasing the daily life of your ancestors and try your hand at an ancient craft. Everyone loves walled medieval Levoca with its historic buildings, Master Paul’s statues and old legends. We’ll tour grand St. Jakub’s Cathedral with a dozen carved
& painted altars from the late 1500s. Explore Spis Castle, the largest Gothic ruin in Europe or take a mini-hike to see butterflies/ mountain flowers. Feast on local gulas and dance with vibrant villagers at a Rusyn wedding.
Tues., July 12 – Travel into remote, beautiful Zamagurie to Stara Lubovna’s outdoor museum – the homes depict birth, wedding, death and holiday customs; option to tour the castle. Take a unique raft ride on the scenic Dunajec River in Pieniny National Park and step into Poland. Raft drivers tell legends. We top the day with a Goral picnic and lively local tunes.
Wed. July 13 - To Presov to marvel at the Greek Catholic Cathedral with icons galore and then time to explore the historic square, beautiful cathedral or local museum. Tour beautifully restored Kosice's old town with a local guide and marvel at St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral, the famed Singing Fountain and more. A bit of free time to explore the grounds and indoor pool of our castle hotel followed by an elegant dinner in the grand dining room. (2 nights in Kosice (ABOV) in s.e. Slovakia in a historic castle/hotel of Europe)
Thurs., July 14 - To Bardejov, the Pearl of Saris, Slovakia’s other walled town and a UNESCO Treasure. Tour the historic square and magnificent St. Egidius Church. Enjoy the unique icon museum. Find out why the statue atop town hall moons the mayor's office. Visit an ancient onion-domed wooden Rusyn church with icons and stories galore. Then on to a most amazing village church with all kinds of treasures. Dinner at a favorite and fun local restaurant in Bardejov.
Fri., July 15 - Drive through spectacular scenery. We head west and follow the mighty Vah River on a castle-studded ride. Visit the stunning Nativity that focuses on Slovak village life and history, then charming Cicmany to marvel at the log homes decorated with ancient motifs. We’ll party and dance in Krakovany where the folk group performs western Slovak village wedding customs just for us. (2 nights in Bratislava, southwestern Slovakia, the capital)
Sat., July 16 – Tour a medieval treasure, Cerveny Kamen Castle, with its fascinating legends, museum of furniture and even a golden bed! On to an ancient mill, a museum of naïve folk are which showcases the still functioning wooden mill wheels. Explore the Royal Carpathian Wine Road, tour vineyards and enjoy wine tasting as we learn about 700 years of wine culture on these verdant slopes. A festive farewell dinner is a joyful ending to our Treasures Tour!
